Aries March 21- April 19



In Astrolosophy, Aries is ruled by the planet named after the Roman “god of war”, Mars. Mars was said to assist Roman soldiers during wars. It was believed that Mars would bring his two sons “Phobos” (fear) and “Deimos” (dread) with him into battle. The two moons of the planet Mars are named after his children as well.

Taurus April 19 - May 21st



The most widely known myth associated with Taurus is the story of Zeus turning himself into a bull to rescue and seduce Europa. Another myth involves Jupiter/Zeus turning IO into a bull to hide here from Hera. In one of the twelve labors of Hercules/Herakles, the hero rides a bull across the ocean.

Gemini May 21st -June 21st



Gemini in mythology are the twins: Castor and Pollux. Castor and Pollux were born out of an egg because Zeus disguised as a swan, mated with Leda. The Twins were said to have been part of Jason and the Argonauts quest to find the golden fleece. The mortal brother Castor was killed in battle and the Demi god Pollux asked that his brother be saved. As a compromise both brothers were placed among the stars for eternity.

Cancer June 21 - July 22



In the myth, Hera sends the crab to distract Hercules while the hero is fighting the Lernaean Hydra, the serpent-like beast with many heads and a poisonous breath of fire. Each time Hercules would cut off a head, two more would grow in its place. When the crab tries to kill Hercules, or at least distract him long enough that the hydra kills him, Hercules kicks it all the way to the stars. This happened during one of the “twelve labors” that was put upon Hercules for crimes that Hercules committed while under the influence of a spell that queen Hera placed upon the hero. When the crab was extinguished, Hera placed the crab among the stars for eternity.

Leo July 22 - August 23



There are many myths associated with Leo. The most well known is the first of Hercules’s 12 Labors: To kill the Namean Lion. It was very difficult for Hercules to kill the Lion because its arrows could not penetrate the Lion’s fur which was said to be as strong as gold. Athena advised Hercules to use the lions own claws to skin him after he was victorious. Among the constellations, the Lion was considered the crowning star of Jupiter (Zeus) and Juno (Hera) with the quadruple star system, Regulus at its head.

Virgo August 23 - September 22



There are countless myths involving the zodiac sign of Virgo. Virgo has so many different personas: Astrea, Andromeda, Demeter, Ceres, Ma’at, Justitia, Dike, Ishtar, and Isis. The Virgo Constellation is the largest constellation on the path of the sun known by astrologers as the ecliptic. Virgo is also the virgin mother goddess associated with the Virgin Mary or La Virgen de Guadalupe. Virgo is seen as the moral compass of the zodiac measuring justice using her scales. Once man became too greedy, violent and destructive, she ascended back to the stars leaving mankind with a 40º constellation called Virgo and a 30º degree constellation called Libra to remind the human race to use temperance in its affairs

Libra September 23rd -October 23rd

Libra: The Scales


The Goddess Astraea can be associated with many goddesses of justice and ethics all over the world. The most familiar goddesses that she is associated with are Ma’at and Venus. In Astrology, she along with the Virgin Andromeda, are associated with the sign of Virgo, and the scales of Justice she carries is in fact Libra. Libra is the only inanimate object on the zodiac ecliptic. Libra also represents the chariot of Pluto or Hades. This chariot was drawn by four dark horses and aided with the abduction of Persephone (Proserpina). Persephone’s mother Demeter (Ceres) is said to be depressed through the winter because that is the season that Persephone is with Pluto in the underworld.

Scorpio October 23rd - November 22nd

Scorpio: The Scorpion, The Eagle and The Phoenix


There is more than one account of the myth of Scorpius (Scorpio in astrology). It involves Orion, the hunter and Artemis the goddess of the hunt, the sun god Apollo’s twin sister. The most common account is that Orion boasted of his hunting skills and killed many forest animals. Artemis fought Orion in a battle so big it caught Zeus’ attention. Eventually, Artemis had the Scorpion extinguish Orion and Zeus subsequently placed him among the stars. Artemis asked that the scorpion be placed there as well as a warning to humanity not to let its ego get out of control. Orion is also linked to the Khemetic or Egyptian god Ausar (Osiris)


Sagittarius November 22 -December 21st


Sagittarius originally went by the name of Chiron. Instead of being just “The Archer,” Chiron was also known as the “wounded healer” and the “teacher of heroes.” He was mortally wounded by one of the arrows that Hercules dipped in the poisonous and fatal blood of the Lernaean Hydra. Since Chiron was an immortal, he suffered profoundly but could not die. Hercules stikes a deal with Zeus to have Prometheus released from being chained to a rock for giving fire to humans and in exchange for the sacrifice of Chiron’s life. Since Chiron was the teacher of such heros as Achilles, Jason of Argos and the Gemini twins, he was placed among the stars.

December 21 - January 20

Capricornus: The Sea Goat (EA)


Some accounts link Capricorn to Ea or Enki, the primordial god of water and creation that manifested into consciousness to bring wisdom and civilization to humanity.The modern association with Capricorn is related to Zeus’ foster mother Amalthea. Since Zeus’ father Cronus swallowed his siblings before he was born, Cronus’ wife Rhea sent Zeus to live in a sea town and gave Cronus a rock wrapped in a blanket. Amalthea was a satyr, so Zeus’s nanny was half goat. This gave Zeus the opportunity to grow up, overthrow the Titans and free his brothers and sisters from Cronus’ stomach

January 20 - February 19

Aquarius: The Water Bearer


There are various myths involving Aquarius. In the Bible he is equated with Noah from the Noah’s Ark flood story. However, before the age of Christianity, Aquarius was associated with Deucalion in Greece and Utnapishtim from a similar flood story called the, “Epic of Gilgamesh.” There are many similarities between Gilgamesh, Hercules and Orion “the hunter.” The Sumerian account includes many similar details about the great flood. While the myth from Greece Included Deucalion’s salvation from the flood, but this account did not include saving two of each animal. Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha were forced to repopulate the world by throwing rocks over their shoulders. All of the men formed behind Deucalion and all of the women formed behind Pyrrha. In one account, Pandora from the Pandora’s box myth emerged behind Pyrrha.


Pisces February 19 - March 20

Pisces: The Fish


Pisces is located in the sea of the constellations with Aquarius and Capricorn the Seagoat. There are a few myths involving Pisces. The myth is the story of Aphrodite and Eros escaping Typhon. In one account Aphrodite and Eros are turned into fish and swim away. Mother and son had tied their tails together so they would not be separated. In an alternate version they turn into fish and are lead to safety by two fish. The heroic efforts of the two fish had them immortalized amongst the constellations.
