What is Mercury Retrograde?
If you are reading this article I must congratulate you for trying to understand the way the philosophy of Astrology works beyond just your sun sign.
Mercury Retrograde is a short period of time when the planet Mercury appears to stop and go backwards in the sky. The retrograde cycle for Mercury happens three times a year. (It occasionally will take place four times a year.)
Why Is Mercury Retrograde Important?
Mercury, known to the Greeks as Hermes and the Egyptians as Tehuti/Thoth is often referred to as the “Cosmic Magician.” Mercury is said to rule over the first air sign of the zodiac, Gemini and the second earth sign Virgo. Mercury is associated with countless things, but for this article we will stick to: communication, the mind, intelligence, commerce, travel and trickery.
Mercury can impact less obvious forms of communication such as music, singing, prayer, meditation or expression of any kind. Given that Mercury also rules over gymnasiums, it is safe to say that this herald rules over all forms of verbal and non-verbal communications between sentient beings.
Mercury retrograde is the time when your computer, network, printer and technology in general are more likely to be more challenging to use. Based on what people share, you are more likely to miss your bus, plane, train or simply have your mode of transportation malfunction. Mercury Retrograde supposedly impacts cell phones, internet connections as well as broadcast and cable television. In Astrological theory, anything that has to do with communication or electricity will be impacted by Mercury Retrograde.
Mercury goes retrograde in Scorpio, a fixed water sign, on October 4, 2014 at 10:02 am PDT, 1:02 pm EDT and 5:02 pm UT/GMT. This will shine light on where we are stubborn and determined emotionally by putting us through trials and tribulations that may prompt us to re-evaluate our attitude.
What Is The Importance Of This Mercury Retrograde?
Mercury will station retrograde in the sign of Scorpio less than two weeks after one of Scorpio’s ruling planets, Pluto stations direct. This will create a cosmic chime to resolve all emotional, social, financial and karmic debt as Mercury moves westward to become a morning star again. This act between the sacred masculine and sacred feminine symbolizes the rebirth and transformation of intellect, thought (Thoth) and attitude in the same manner that the New Moon resets our internal emotional and circadian clock.
What Should I Look For?
If you have read this far into the article, chances are that you have your own birth or natal chart. If not, you can order one with interpretation from my store or get one absolutely free by creating an account astrology.com. Once you have your chart you should look to see which zodiac sign your Mercury is in as well as how many degrees you were born into that particular sign. Mercury was also known as the god of wisdom and healing so it is believed that your health may begin to deteriorate if you are not careful or have a complete turn around if you have been focused on making healthy choices.
Above the archetypal knowledge and myth, consider the concept that drives, “the law of attraction.” In this theory, the more you focus on something bad or good, the more likely it is to manifest. This is one of the major reasons that many skeptics have a hard time with the philosophy of astrology. There is a prevailing belief that periods like Mercury Retrograde can create what is known as a “self-fulfilling prophecy.” So be careful not to talk yourself into adversity by focusing on potential problems. Instead look for the possible opportunity that shows up with each challenge with the assumption that the seed of something constructive always manifests with those nasty destructive moments.
Perhaps a flexible attitude can assist you with building a momentum of creativity that will potentially increase the likelihood of success that one seeks from the aforementioned “law of attraction?”
This is important because retrograde during a water sign, usually means more emotional drama as we tend to take things personally and are often guilty of sloppy communication. In short, people act out emotionally before reflection. People losing their keys, favorite articles of clothing or arriving at appointments late, are said to happen with greater frequency during Mercury Retrograde.
Sometimes, Mercury Retrograde can be beneficial. Many people often finish things they may have started a long time ago or at least get back on track to finishing. Sometimes Mercury Retrograde can initiate a change in our behavior that is the opposite to the perspective that we had before, so it is definitely not ALL bad.
Why is it called “Mercury Retrograde?”
Well, If you looked up in the night sky over a period of a few months, every day at the same time, you would see the planet Mercury slowly changing its position moving in a forward direction east to west. When Mercury is in its inferior position it is on the side of the sun closer to the earth. When Mercury is in its “superior” position, its on the other side of the sun further from the earth. So essentially, Mercury moves so fast west that it eventually becomes east again. When Mercury is behind the sun and closest to the earth, he is an evening star close to the horizon, but when our cosmic “quick silver” passes up the sun, he becomes a morning star. So Mercury is always moving forward very fast. There are no brakes, no reverse or “retrograde” direction. The term retrograde is an optical illusion that is relative to the sun.
Mercury only begins to look like it is going backwards to the same places (declination and right ascension) that it was visible in previous nights as it drops down closer to the horizon. This is what mystics and astronomers alike call an “apparent” motion. Apparent motion means that the position of Mercury only appears to be moving backwards (or forward) when the only event that has happened is that Mercury is moving around the sun so quickly that it looks like its going backwards. This apparent motion is called retrograde. Think of the word “retro” like a “throw back” to the past.
Mercury’s energy will have a powerful and somewhat disruptive impact on our emotions and our relationships in general.
Will The Grand Fire Trine Impact My Drive and Enthusiasm?
Yes! But that is not all! Mars remains in Sagittarius while Venus and Mercury dance their way through Libra until October 23rd right as the sun goes into Scorpio. In fact, Venus goes into Scorpio 53 minutes before the New Moon/81% Solar Eclipse at 2:45 pm PDT, 5:45 pm EDT and 9:45 pm UT/GMT. This means that your sex drive will enjoy a nitrous boost along with your zest to live life inspiring you to put more vigor into your figure. The key is to not let Jupiter in Leo’s ADHD expand you into figuratively, “biting off more than you can chew.”
Before any of the solar eclipse energy happens, expect a little healthy discord in your relationship to yourself and with others as the Full Moon/Total Lunar Eclipse in Aries activates the grand cardinal cross squares that we have been experiencing since 2012. Keep a journal and do a lot of shadow work. That is, learn to accept your less ideal “shadow” side with your more tangible and “luminous” side, because the sixth, of seven exact squares, hits in mid December.
WOW! That was fast! This year of the green wood horse really has been galloping hasn’t it!?
Venus in Libra? Will This Impact My Love Life?
Love and all of the unions and partnerships it creates, will demand more heart, intensity, sacrifice, attention and effort if you want the outcome that you have prayed or meditated upon to manifest. The active change of the fire trine between Jupiter in Leo, Mars in Sagittarius and Uranus and Eris in Aries, will be driving you to re-connect and resolve all of the hardest lessons. Try to indulge in recreation as you you relive all that you have encountered since the last set of full moon/Lunar Eclipses and New Moon/Solar Eclipses that have taken place since Scorpio’s ruler, Pluto originally went retrograde the night of the Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse in Libra.
Mercury’s Journey Crusade With Mars and Venus
Scorpio is a yin/feminine/night sign that expresses Mars’ dynamic will in a more reserved and reflective manner. But when this energy decides to make a change, nothing less than total transformation takes place as this “god of war” takes no prisoners and negotiates with no one. That’s right, there be plenty of people singing the “my way or the highway” song so either pull out the earphones or ear plugs or be prepared to sing-a-long. Even if you feel a bit off key. While the retrograde cycle starts at 2º Scorpio, Mercury will travel all the way back to 16º Libra influencing us to re-evaluate ALL partnerships. Considering the idea that Saturn is in Scorpio racing towards Sagittarius, expect conversations and actions to be no holds bar. That’s right, more #BSCC. So make sure that you bet all of the Bat $h*t Cray Cray in your belfry out just in time for Halloween. Heaven knows that some of us may need a costume after we express our strongest opinions to others to the point of a “Fukushima meltdown.” Mind quakes, emotional tsunamis, and “hoof in mouth” syndrome will all be yours unless you choose to take everything one step at a time. Don’t let the afterburners on Mercury’s winged sandals encourage you to move any faster than you want. Yes avoid signing important documents, but if you must do so, do it mindfully after a lot of research.
The Mythology and Folklore of Mercury Retrograde
Mercury is the planet closest to the sun so the Romans dubbed him “messenger of the gods” as the sun itself was more or less considered a celestial representation of God at that time. Mercury had a female equivalent at that time known as Iris, just like there are gods in various cultures such as, Hermes, Thoth/Tehuti, Seshat, Quezatcoatl, Loki, and Kukulcan with the same characteristics. Mercury is also considered the bringer of dreams, and guardian of thieves. He was the only Olympian that could go back and forth between the underworld, the earth and Mount Olympus effortlessly. Mercury is the son of Maia, a mountain nymph who is one of the seven Pleiadian Goddesses. Her father is Atlas, the Titan famous for holding up the sky or earth and leading the war against the Olympians.
Mercury/Hermes a born trickster
A Trickster is Born!
When still an infant, Mercury stole cattle from the god Apollo, and hid them in his mother’s mountain cave. When Apollo stormed into Maia’s cave, she showed him the tiny baby to prove he could not have been the cattle thief. Although Mercury was only a day old, Apollo was not fooled. Apollo appealed to Jupiter (Zeus) to punish Mercury. Jupiter arbitrated by requiring Mercury to give back the cattle. During the feud, baby Mercury played the lyre, and Apollo was so enchanted by the music that he dropped the charges. Apollo was so taken with the lyre that he even gave some of the cattle to Mercury, along with other gifts. Apollo would use the lyre in his role as the patron of the Muses. (The nine sister goddesses of inspiration that give us words like “music” and “museum”).
