Solar Eclipse: Scorpius The Seer
What About Scorpio?
Of the 12 signs in astrology, Scorpio definitely has a serious reputation. They are known for strong character traits ranging from seriousness through playful sensuality. But the common denominator is intensity.
Scorpion intuition is perhaps their most intense trait because it brings out the inner seer in each of them. That part of scorpio that can sense the future before it arrives.
On a personal level, the new moon in Scorpio is great for making wishes for the next year while cleaning your home to make space for your wishes to manifest. This is a special kind of cleansing that involves cleansing and disinfection along with white sage, essential oils or perhaps prayer and or meditation. Some people use incense, crystals, water from the ocean or even candles. The closer you look into folk traditions of various cultures around the world, the more you see cleansing on both the physical and metaphysical level.
Energy and action output define Mars while rejuvenation and rebirth define Pluto. The mythology associated with these two planets are now a big part of the Scorpio archetype. The active, bold and alpha personality traits that define the sacred masculine largely originates with Mars. Mars is overt, blunt and unapologetic about pioneering his way through the physical world. Pluto represents the more suppressed desires that we often keep hidden underneath the surface until its passions boil over, carrying us from the frying pan and into the fire. Since Pluto is so far from the sun, this suggests that most of these things happen “off the radar” of other people’s awareness and is apparent only to us in the darkness. Pluto represents a part of us that is so dark that the moon dare not go there. Pluto is basically the, “falling tree in the forest” or the “Las Vegas” of the solar system.
The fire element is associated with Mars and ice (the water element) is associated with Pluto creating a complete range of character between the positive and negative poles of personality that are known as yin and yang. This is a clue to perhaps why Scorpios can often be perceived as hyper masculine or hyper feminine. Clearly, there is a huge range between these polar opposites. A point to remember, Mars will boasts how he will mop up the floor with you, while Pluto will silently organize your funeral with the glee of a wedding planner with an unlimited budget. So make sure you stay on the right side of these people on a personal level. On a social level, be sure to use the diplomacy and partnership skills that the cosmos taught while under the sign of Libra to avoid any bad karmic debts.
Ophiuchus The Sidereal Sire of Healing
In sidereal astrology, Scorpius is only 7º degrees long with the remainder of the 30º house being taken up by Ophiuchus. Known as Serpentarius or Imhotep, Ophiuchus is associated with the healing properties of Scorpio. The Caduceus and the Rod of Asclepius show a correlation between snakes and healing in the subject of mythology. If you think about it for a moment, since scorpions can be deadly, it would only make sense that they have healing traits to balance them out. Ophiuchus, “The Snake Bearer,” only has one foot on the zodiac ecliptic but technically that makes him the 13th sign of the zodiac. The number 13 matches the 13 trecenas of the night and day wave cycle that is vital to the moon calendar that governs Mayan astrology and its enigmatic connection to the plumed serpent of transcendence Kukulcan.
New Moon/Solar Eclipse?
Since this is the year of the snake, expect slow gradual changes on a personal level and big sudden shifts on a transpersonal level. Look at the remainder of this Mercury Retrograde cycle as the snake shedding its skin in preparation for inevitable change. This week’s solar eclipse urges us to set our goals for the next six (6) months by actively doing/participating in what we most want to happen professionally and personally.
Pluto The Dwarf Planet?
Large scorpions in hot places are not nearly as potent and dangerous as the small variety of scorpion. I suppose the same thing can be said about the punch that the dwarf planet Pluto has in astrology. While Pluto is in charge of all covert operations, since it currently is in Capricorn (2010-2024), the life-death-rebirth cycle symbolic of Pluto and the phoenix aspect of scorpio, are having a profound impact on the structures and foundations all over the world. Pluto has been forming some energetic squares with Uranus in Aries creating a lot of upheaval. While a lot of the changes may be surprisingly shocking and unexpected, (Uranus’ mantra). Such shifts are only supposed to push people towards their real life’s purpose, instead of the name, rank, cookie cutter existence that the dominant culture wants to continue forever. The key point is that adaptability needs to be built into the structure of everything ranging from our attitudes about our beliefs about consciousness to our attitude about the inequality that is imposed upon people from the moment that they are born. Its about developing a happy medium between perseverance and being rigid or change versus stability.
Schizophrenic or Saint?
Scorpios know about being stubborn and “fixed” in their ways. But to be fair, scorpio knows a lot about a range of subjects and approaches. This is demonstrated in the various archetypes of Scorpio:
- The Spider = Spoiled or Mean Spirit
- The Scorpion= Jealous and Temperamental
- The Lizard = Humble, Observer, Revenge
- The Serpent = Protective, Creative, Venomous
- The Wolf= Strong, Wise, Responsible
- The Eagle = The Hero Persona
- The Phoenix = The Spiritually Evolved Persona
Like the seven year cycle that is associated with human beings in Developmental Psychology, the different archetypes can be applied to scorpios individually or to society as a whole. On a large transpersonal level, this can be applied to general personality types like the Enneagram or the Briggs Myers test. The key point to remember is that a solar eclipse in scorpio, sets you up to focus on building a future upon a strong foundation that could look like one or all of the personality traits listed above.
Work with your mind and your intuition!
Since Saturn is in Scorpio, the lord of limitations (Saturn) and the lord of the underworld (Pluto) may be very challenging or very rewarding. Whether you feel like a schizophrenic or saint, the outcome depends on your ability to be flexible, set guidelines and stick to your plan. Above all, learn from your mistakes and EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHILE URANUS CONTINUES TO SQUARE DANCE WITH PLUTO.
Last year Mercury Retrograded through fire signs teaching us all to look before we leap. This year the retrogrades have all been in water signs. So while we learned to control our actions, and expand and contract through creation last year, this year’s lessons were all about emotion(s). While we learned a lot about emotions under Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio, we also learned lessons of resistance from their earth element opposites (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo). Saturn in Scorpio made us look at where we are over-invested and where we need to step up our game. The unifying theme that comes up each retrograde period is a lesson on patience. As we go through our list of re-dos, we must re-test our patience (Mercury) so that all that we have learned becomes a launching pad for big changes (Uranus in Aries) in your life that are sustainable (Saturn). This allows us to monitor any unclear desires and dreams on a high definition screen of clarity put the power in our hands to change our fate and fortune. (Jupiter in Cancer).
When Mercury Retrograde ends on November 10th, Mercury’s smokescreen of miscommunication will go away for 88 days while reflect on how well we communicate when we don’t feel understood. Each time we experience a misunderstanding during Mercury Retrograde it acts much like the moon eclipsing the sun, preventing billions of kilowatts from reaching the earth. So we must remind ourselves that the effect is only temporary. Since we do this three times a year, perhaps it is a good time to ask yourself if you have mastered Mercury Retrograde. I don’t mean stop bad traffic and miscommunication, but how well we handle things when they are not ideal.
As we begin our charge towards the full moon in Taurus on November 17th 7:16 am PST, this will be the time to evaluate how well we have learned to control our inner beast, (the bull’s rage) as it carries Europa across the ocean (emotions) to Crete. With the chrysalis of change symbolized by the Scorpio new moon/ solar eclipse starting this cycle, it is important to choose whether or not you want to handle things like the unevolved spider or transcend with the phoenix. So while these last few weeks have been active, just be aware that now the show has begun and it is time for you to shine.
